Hacking the xBox

Entertainment, General Technology

I can guarantee that topic alone will get me tons of hits on this site.  Sorry – you won’t find directions here – just a description of my attempts to get mine setup. I always wondered about those geeks people that hacked various devices just so that they could run Linux on it.  I couldn’t … Read More “Hacking the xBox” »

Frodo’s Pizza

Local, Restaurants

I’m always hesitant to review a restaurant with which I’ve had such a long, long history.  I tend to focus on those places that are new (or at least new to me.)  However, I had opportunity to eat at Frodo’s Pizza twice this week, so I decided it was high time to give them the … Read More “Frodo’s Pizza” »

Art in the Park

Entertainment, Local

Saturday Laura and I headed downtown for the 15th Annual Art in the Park.  The festival originally started at as a display by a few local artists in Cleveland Park.  It has since migrated to the Falls Park area, with most of the artists booths actually on South Main Street rather than in the park … Read More “Art in the Park” »

Paradigm Shift

Photography

Back when I got my first digital camera, my thoughts were that it would only really be used for web images.  If I wanted something of higher quality, I would use my 35mm SLR.  After all, I could always scan the photos and get really high quality digital images. This last little project with … Read More “Paradigm Shift” »

Time Passages

Photography, Travel

Despite its flaws, I’ve had a blast with the new Flickr Maps over the past several days.  Seeing my travels laid out so neatly has prompted me to go back into my older photo archives and upload some of those images.  There were quite a few digital images, but most were taken with a … Read More “Time Passages” »

More on Flickr Maps

Posted on September 11, 2006 By Tom No Comments on More on Flickr Maps
General Technology, Geocaching and Maps, Photography, Uncategorized

It was as I suspected.  The new Flickr Maps application does not use EXIF data, but some proprietary format.  If there is existing EXIF or GPS data for an image, Flickr can import it, but other than import it doesn’t use that data. This means that if an image is geotagged using Flickr’s handy map … Read More “More on Flickr Maps” »

Obituary Nicknames

Miscellaneous

From this morning’s obituaries in the Greenville News… Shular "Tom" Dee Burrell  Charles "Louie" Homer Carlton Katherine "Kay" Mellom Gladys Inez "Nan" Parkins Willie "Pie Face" Priestly I can understand wanting to include the dearly departed’s nickname in the obituary.  After all, the idea is to remember them as they were known in life.  Tom, … Read More “Obituary Nicknames” »

Flickr Maps

General Technology, Geocaching and Maps, Photography

Flickr has added a new mapping application to its list of imaging services.  Since Flickr is a Yahoo company it uses the new Yahoo maps.  Google may have an advantage over Yahoo with more accurate maps and integration with Google Earth.  However Flickr does have a slick new interface and a cool map page for … Read More “Flickr Maps” »

Star Trek 40th Anniversary

Entertainment

Exactly 40 years ago tonight  Star Trek debuted on NBC with the episode "The Man Trap."  TV Land aired that episode this evening, along with four others.  The episodes for the first series were filmed, but were not aired sequentially.  Some episodes that aired later in the year actually had elements that pre-dated "The Man … Read More “Star Trek 40th Anniversary” »

Good to go

Rants

I’ve heard the phrase in at least five different television commercials, from Taco Bell to Quaker Oats.  "Good to go" receives my nomination for most overvused phrase of 2006.
