Cullowhee Road Trip

It was possibly the most surreal away game road trip I’ve taken. I picked up my friend Tex from Grapevine, Texas, at the airport, and were joined by Paul W for the trek to Cullowhee for the Furman game against Western Carolina University.

Pet Traffic Peeve

I don’t know why this always happens right in front of me.  We’re on the ramp onto the interstate.  Despite the fact that there is an ACCELERATION LANE to merge into the traffic stream, the dufous in front of me turns on a left turn signal, puts on the brakes, and comes to a complete … Read More “Pet Traffic Peeve” »

Inspiration Generator?

Miscellaneous

I found this link via the "Popular" listings on del.icio.us.  This page has an "Imagination Prompt Generator", where, at the touch of a button, one can get ideas for one’s blog, journal, or essay assigned by a sadistic teacher.  Here are a few gems… Describe your first ‘crush’. What was the person like? Could you … Read More “Inspiration Generator?” »

Spice, Spice, Baby – The Bohemian

Restaurants

You guessed it. Laura is out of town, so I’m trying a new restaurant. My visit to The Bohemian was partly out of interest, and partly motivated by charity. Several of the local restaurants were donating tonight’s proceeds to Katrina Relief, so I can have a good meal and feel good about doing it. The irony of this type of charity is not lost on me – I pig out so people don’t starve. The Bohemian and 33 Liberty are participating.

Goodbye, Little Buddy

CNN reports that Bob Denver, who played Gilligan in the 1960 has died from complications of treatment he was receiving for cancer.  He was 70.  Hard to think of him as being that old. In tribute,  once again here’s my four-part fugue based on the theme from Gilligan’s Island.

Gimme that Old Time Religion

Rants, Religion

I figured it was just a matter of time before the religious wingnuts came out. The organization, Repent America, implies that Hurricane Katrina was sent by God to destroy New Orleans before its Southern Decadence festival. I’m guessing Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell are still reeling from the Chavez comments. It hasn’t been long enough for them to forget themselves and say something asinine, but I don’t expect that to last.

CRW_1663 In a previous post about flying into Washington DC I mentioned seeing several kayaks hovering around a rapid on the Potomac. I don’t think it was this one, but this is impressive enough.

I think Laura has had me watching too many of those home improvement shows.  Last night I dreamed that we had bought a small house near Furman for her to use while she is on sabbatical this year.  There were holes in the walls and problems everywhere, and we were trying to get the In … Read More “Clean Sweep” »

Shaken, Not Stirred – Part II

Entertainment, Recipes

Having had the perfect martini in Washington DC, we decided to search for a close approximation in Greenville.  Our search took us to Sharkey’s Pub, on Main Street in Greenville.  It was as we feared.  Bars in Greenville are limited to mini-bottle quantities, and therefore cannot mix drinks appropriately.  According to the majority of recipes … Read More “Shaken, Not Stirred – Part II” »

Sympathy for the Devil

Rants

There is no way I will let the Bush Administration off the hook for the botched response to the after-the-disaster catastrophe in New Orleans.  However, I will make these concessions for him, as well as Brown and Chertoff.  Even though the president seemed clueless while touring the devastation (telling survivors that they should go to … Read More “Sympathy for the Devil” »
