Media Literacy and Tasteless Advertising

Posted on January 3, 2011 By Tom 2 Comments on Media Literacy and Tasteless Advertising
EdTech, Miscellaneous

Back in the 1980s I used to teach a unit on propaganda techniques to my seventh grade students. We would study Edward Filene’s seven techniques of propaganda, then analyze print and television ads to see how these were used. The students would then try to write their own ads using these techniques. Today this would now fall under the standards for Media Literacy, but essentially it was the same thing.

Over the holidays we watched more junk TV than we usually do, and there seemed to be lots of ads for products from the National Collectors’ Mint. This company specializes in private minting of commemorative coins, and their ads are so over the top that they seemed like a perfect candidate for one of these propaganda technique lessons. In particular, I kept seeing ads for this 9-11 commemorative coin…

I’ll say up front that I think this is a tasteless scam. It plays upon emotions and tries to get people to invest in something that is relatively worthless. I think that anyone that falls for this is an idiot, and I find it appalling that there are some many of these advertisements on television – TV Spam. That aside, though, let’s take a look at some of the specific techniques this advertisement uses.

Surprise Party

I did it. Somehow I’ve managed to survive for half a century. I’ve only gotten this far with lots and lots of help, and for that I am truly thankful.

Laura managed to pull off a surprise party for me this past Saturday after my concert in Hendersonville. I arrived at home (still in my concert tuxedo) to find lots of friends and family at the house. We had a great time.

Singing for Your Supper

This time of year gets crazy with concerts, parties, and other social obligations. It’s not quite as bad as when I was a choir director AND teaching school music, but it’s hectic, nonetheless. I always have additional singing gigs, and this year we seem to have more than usual. We have a regular Carolina Christmas … Read More “Singing for Your Supper” »

Bobby Lamb

I planned to do something I hadn’t done in nearly 20 years. I was going to skip Furman’s home game with Georgia Southern on Saturday – the last game of the season and with one of Furman’s main rivals – and go kayaking. Furman hadn’t been playing well this season, and I was just ready for a change. Be careful what you wish for. The change I wanted was much more dramatic than I had anticipated. On Friday, head coach Bobby Lamb resigned. I immediately changed my plans and decided to go to the game.

Bobby Lamb has been associated with Furman for nearly 29 years. My senior year at Furman Bobby was a freshman, taking over as quarterback for the team. He has been with the team in some capacity ever since, as an assistant coach, and for the last nine years as head coach. Unfortunately the last six years or so have not been kind, with Furman not playing the kind of football we saw in 1980’s. There were already grumblings.

Just a quick update – I’ve got several posts in the hopper, but haven’t had a chance to finish them. On Thursday I went in for some oral surgery, and that’s had me kind of out of action for the weekend. I’d thought I would have loads of time for writing while I recuperated, but … Read More “Weekend Update” »

Veterans Day 2010

This week I’ve been working with several schools to put together Veterans Day programs. While doing so the strains of the third movement of Randall Thompson’s Testament of Freedom kept running through my head. Perhaps old TJ expressed it best… We fight not for glory or for conquest. We exhibit to mankind the remarkable spectacle … Read More “Veterans Day 2010” »

Twitter Spam

At first I thought it was great. In June of 2009 I casually tweeted that I couldn’t wait until my new Mac was delivered, and wondered what was holding up FedEx. It was rhetorical. FedEx was actually right on time with the delivery. However, my tweet prompted a response from FedEx asking if there was … Read More “Twitter Spam” »

Belltower Through the Weeds

Three seemingly unrelated tales of environmental misunderstanding…

When I was playing disc golf at Furman Sunday afternoon I noticed something unusual. There were weeds everywhere and the place looked badly overgrown. This was most noticeable around several of the park benches and picnic tables around the lake.

Furman usually keeps immaculate grounds. Not a blade of grass is left too long, nor leaf left to clutter the green grass. With students returning and so many families on campus, I couldn’t understand why things were left like this. I figured cut-backs on maintenance were much greater than I had thought.

Furman Bell Tower

When I got home and mentioned this to Laura, she set me straight. This is part of Furman’s sustainability program, and the intent is to let portions of the lake shoreline return to a more “natural state.” Of course, one of my fellow alumni and Facebook friends pointed out that this is a man-made lake, so how could it be natural. My reply was that it probably focuses on saving fuel by not cutting down the weeds.

I was only partially correct. What looks like weeds to me are actually carefully selected natural plants, following an extensive landscaping plan. The plan is to create a wildflower meadow along the banks. While the flowers aren’t in bloom, they do look like weeds.

Been a crazy, crazy week, both at work and at home. There hasn’t been much time to paddle, take photos, or chase down fire towers or old schools. Fundamentalist Mormon Attire

I stopped by our local sandwich shop for a quick lunch yesterday.  The lady behind the counter is of Islamic descent, and wears a head scarf.  She is always pleasant, if not a bit shy and deferential.

As I sat with my lunch, I thought about her attire.  I’ll be up front and admit that my initial reaction is always one of cultural xenophobia.  It brings to mind the treatment of women in general in Middle Eastern countries, and the lack of rights for so many of them.

About the time I’m ready to let loose with a round of mental condemnation, I pull up short.  What really motivates someone in their choice of attire.  Is it really a choice?  I am concerned for this woman if she were forced to wear this by her husband, but it could just as easily have been a cultural choice of her own.  She may simply feel more comfortable wearing that with which she is familiar.
