Pet Pizza Peeve

Rants, Restaurants

One of our favorite Thai restaurants is located right next door to a Papa John’s Pizza place.  Sometimes it’s nearly impossible to find a place to park because all of the spots are taken by pizza delivery cars.  The photo below clearly shows the joint’s attitude toward their own customers (see inset).  You can imagine … Read More “Pet Pizza Peeve” »

Two coffees to go

Restaurants

Two drive-through coffee shops have made an appearance in Duncan in the past year.  Both offer similar products, but apart from products, the two couldn’t be more different. The first to make its appearance was Curbside Coffee.  Curbside moved into a defunct Dairy Queen located right next to a huge truck stop right at I-85.  … Read More “Two coffees to go” »

Please, no wax

Gear

I’ve discovered a major drawback with PDAs that include phone capabilities, such as Treos and Blackberries. First, you can’t multitask. There’s no good way to look at your calandar while you’re on the phone. More importantly, I find it hard to view data on my screen because of ear prints. I may have stop making … Read More “Please, no wax” »

Cache In, Trash Out

Geocaching and Maps, Local

On Saturday the Upstate South Carolina Geocachers Association (USCGA) held a Cach In, Trash Out (CITO) event at the South Carolina Academic Learning Environment (SCALE).  How’s that for a bunch of acronymns with links? SCALE is our district’s outdoor classroom.  It’s roughly in the shape of South Carolina, and is designed to be a scale … Read More “Cache In, Trash Out” »

Congratulations to Laura!

Miscellaneous

Laura got some very good news yesterday.  She and three other women chemists have been awarded a $500,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to development mentoring programs for women professors in the sciences.  It sounds like an excellent program, but it also sounds like she’s going to be doing quite a bit of work … Read More “Congratulations to Laura!” »

Things Overheard

Overheard from parents waiting for children at school… I don’t care how good the team is, or whose paying for it.  Ain’t no high school football player needs a $10,000 scoreboard. I didn’t have the heart to tell her it was closer to $300,000.

backyard flood We got quite the downpour last night. The waters in the lake rose fairly high, but not to the highest level I’ve seen it. I’m sure the upper end of the lake flooded out completely – once again.

Feasting on Asphalt

Entertainment, Geocaching and Maps, Restaurants, Travel

OK, I want Alton Brown’s job.  His latest TV show is a four-part series on FoodNetwork called "Feasting on Asphalt."  Alton and his crew ride from the Isle of Palms, SC, to Los Angeles, sampling the local cuisine along the way.  AB and crew have tried to make this a true "blue highways" experience by … Read More “Feasting on Asphalt” »

The Three Saludas

Posted on August 13, 2006 By Tom No Comments on The Three Saludas
Local, Photography

I really must have an attraction to flowing water.  It seems that every time I take a drive, I wind up following a river, or crossing the same one multiple times.  Today it was the Saluda. I really needed to repair that damaged hand rail, but this was the first day it hadn’t been stifling … Read More “The Three Saludas” »

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

Posted on August 13, 2006 By Tom No Comments on Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem
Rants

Thus says Psalm 122:6.  The second part of the verse is the one that seems to get people into a whale of trouble, especially given today’s climate – "May those who love you prosper."  Unfortunately, too many evangelicals are willing to give Israel carte blanche in their war against Hezbolla, regardless of how many innocent … Read More “Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem” »
