VACATION!!

Travel

It’s the first week of June and I’m finally on vacation. Most of this week has been spend floating on various things – boats, kayaks, pool floats, alcohol, and dramamine.   We tried going off-shore yesterday, but the seas were quite a bit higher than NOAA predicted. Amy caught a king fish and I caught … Read More “VACATION!!” »

“See, here is water.”

Posted on May 25, 2003 By Tom No Comments on “See, here is water.”
Miscellaneous, Religion

My mother has always been afraid of water. As children, we never went swimming except on very rare occasions. Usually what we called "going swimming" was an afternoon trip to wade in the shallow Rabon Creek. Subsequently, I didn’t learn how to swim when I was young. At 14 I was sent to my oldest … Read More ““See, here is water.”” »

Entropy Sucks …

Rants

…technically, I think it blows, but whatever. I seem to have more than my share of degeneration towards chaos. All three vehicles need repair, my office is a paper-laden wreck, and the roof of our house is still shingled with pollen. The rain exacerbates the situation. I have always been fascinated with office supply stores. … Read More “Entropy Sucks …” »

Peter Yarrow

Music

What a week. It started Monday by spending the evening with a musical legend. We went to a benefit for Max and Trudy Heller, at which Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul, and Mary, performed. The word “concert” could only loosely be applied here. The music was moving only because of its history and in the … Read More “Peter Yarrow” »

Paddling

After running the river Saturday, I decided to check out the American Whitewater site. They have made a major overhaul of the website, with an expanded river guide with photos and video clips. It’s now an excellent resource.

Galloping on My Dinosaur

Entertainment

I can’t believe it! Someone has created a tribute pageto Larry Thor, who recorded the children’s album “Galloping on my Dinosaur.” The album has wonderfully twisted songs, and my siblings have been fighting over who actually owns the one LP of it in our family. I’ve tried to convert it to CD, but my copy … Read More “Galloping on My Dinosaur” »

Enoree River Paddle

Paddling

Two posts in one day. Oh boy. Bob and I got to our meeting spot at the take out on the Tyger River, only to find “No Tresspassing” signs everywhere. I can understand trying to keep the random idiots off your land who want to trash the place, but I wish they could differentiate between … Read More “Enoree River Paddle” »

Happy “Multi-Cultural Excuse for a Party” Day!

Posted on May 6, 2003 By Tom No Comments on Happy “Multi-Cultural Excuse for a Party” Day!
Miscellaneous

We celebrated Cinco de Mayo yesterday at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Monterrey. We ordered our usual two small margaritas, and they brought us out an extra one in celebration. Not being much of a drinker, I battled a tequila-induced headache the rest of the evening. With my throbbing head buried under a pillow, I started … Read More “Happy “Multi-Cultural Excuse for a Party” Day!” »

Now Is the Month of Maying

Posted on May 4, 2003 By Tom No Comments on Now Is the Month of Maying
Miscellaneous

It’s hard to believe May is already here. This academic year has flown by. Along with May comes spring/summer outdoor activities. Greenville now has competing farmer’s markets – one downtown and one at the “official” farmer’s market on Rutherford Road. The “official” one seemed to have much more to offer. The one downtown had a … Read More “Now Is the Month of Maying” »

“It must be a Thursday. I never could get the hang

Rants

Last Saturday I opened the newspaper, and to my astonishment, there was a letter to the editor from one Thomas E. Taylor in Piedmont, lamblasting Jesse Jackson. While I concur with a good portion of his letter, I fear to think how many of my colleagues thought that was me! I actually got a hand-written … Read More ““It must be a Thursday.
