Geocaching with William

Posted on July 7, 2007 By Tom 1 Comment on Geocaching with William
Geocaching and Maps

I had gotten my nephew, William, hooked on geocaching sometime last fall.  For Christmas, he got a new GPS, and I had been promising I teach him how to use it and would take him geocaching again.  I finally got around to fulfilling that promise yesterday. First, I got Will set up with one of … Read More “Geocaching with William” »

Quick(ish) Ribs

Recipes

I actually did this Tuesday night, but I’m just now getting around to writing about it. Let’s say you don’t have a smoker, and you forgot to put your ribs on for that slow-cooking, fall-off-the-bone flavor.  That’s what faced me Tuesday with the pork spare ribs Laura had purchased for dinner, so I had to … Read More “Quick(ish) Ribs” »

Pickens Museums

Local, Photography

I’ve already made mention here about the outstanding job the Pickens County Library is doing with their historical photos and Flickr.  This past week I had seen something about a photography exhibit at the Pickens County Museum, and decided to check it out. I was most impressed with this little museum.  Although it’s not high-tech … Read More “Pickens Museums” »

Get ’em while you can

Gear, Geocaching and Maps

I needed a new power cable for my Garmin GPS. I’ve gone through three of these things since getting this GPS a couple of years ago. Two came apart, and one actually popped a fuse on the cigarette lighter on both of our cars. These things weren’t designed very well. The last one I bought … Read More “Get ’em while you can” »

Red, White, and Boom

You’ve never experienced Southern fireworks until you can actually taste it. – Glynda, after a particularly close discharge For the past several years, our Fourth of July Celebration has included dead cow muscle tossed on a grill at our house, then explosives at Glynda’s house when it gets dark. This year followed that similar pattern, … Read More “Red, White, and Boom” »

Geotagging Dilemma

EdTech, Geocaching and Maps, Internet, Photography

A couple of days ago I mentioned about my problem with Flickr geotagging. The Flickr user in question didn’t limit her geotagging to just her residence, but seems to have polluted the entire area with pictures of herself in lingerie (or less.) Despite my earlier comments, none of them are family-friendly, and almost all of … Read More “Geotagging Dilemma” »

More than Meets the Eye

Posted on July 3, 2007 By Tom 1 Comment on More than Meets the Eye
Entertainment

I am not a child of the 80’s. Transformers was not on my list of Saturday morning cartoons. I still think the terms "AutoBot" and "Decepticon", as well as the names "Megatron" and "Optimus Prime" sound like something a seven year old would have devised. Despite that, and despite myself, I thoroughly enjoyed the new … Read More “More than Meets the Eye” »

Honk if UR…

Honk if UR… I spotted this on my way to work. Fortunately, the light changed and I had time to grab my camera. Oddly enough, I saw this same vehicle with the same sign last week, but didn’t have a camera handy. I wonder how selective they plan to be. I’m not so sure I … Read More “Honk if UR…” »

Sound Activated Flash

Gear, Photography

Today I took a dive into high-speed photography. My setup consists of a sound activated trigger, a disposable camera, and my Nikon D50. In a dark room, I set the camera exposure to bulb, then use the sound activated switch to trigger the flash on the disposable camera.

I was inspired by the work of Flickr photographer TurboJoe. Joe lives here in Greenville, and has taken some astounding photos of balloons popping, water dropping, and light bulbs bursting. He uses better flash equipment than I’ve got, and he’s much better at circuit design. I was after a quick, cheap method of getting this to work. Here are a couple of Joe’s shots…

Google Voyeurism

Posted on June 29, 2007 By Tom 1 Comment on Google Voyeurism
Geocaching and Maps, Internet

As I’ve stated previously, the things that tend to generate the most buzz about Google Earth/Maps have been those of a more pruirient nature – bikini girls in StreetView, or supposedly topless sunbathers in Google Earth.  I’ve even been asked to block Google Earth because of bad language in its Panoramio application. So far I’ve … Read More “Google Voyeurism” »
