Honk if UR…

Honk if UR… I spotted this on my way to work. Fortunately, the light changed and I had time to grab my camera. Oddly enough, I saw this same vehicle with the same sign last week, but didn’t have a camera handy. I wonder how selective they plan to be. I’m not so sure I … Read More “Honk if UR…” »

Sound Activated Flash

Gear, Photography

Today I took a dive into high-speed photography. My setup consists of a sound activated trigger, a disposable camera, and my Nikon D50. In a dark room, I set the camera exposure to bulb, then use the sound activated switch to trigger the flash on the disposable camera.

I was inspired by the work of Flickr photographer TurboJoe. Joe lives here in Greenville, and has taken some astounding photos of balloons popping, water dropping, and light bulbs bursting. He uses better flash equipment than I’ve got, and he’s much better at circuit design. I was after a quick, cheap method of getting this to work. Here are a couple of Joe’s shots…

Google Voyeurism

Geocaching and Maps, Internet

As I’ve stated previously, the things that tend to generate the most buzz about Google Earth/Maps have been those of a more pruirient nature – bikini girls in StreetView, or supposedly topless sunbathers in Google Earth.  I’ve even been asked to block Google Earth because of bad language in its Panoramio application. So far I’ve … Read More “Google Voyeurism” »

Blocking Blogs

EdTech

At NECC I ran into one of my counterparts in another district, and he asked me a distressing question. He asked if our district blocked blogs on our filtering system. I’m hoping I didn’t sound too incredulous when I answered him. No. We don’t block blogs. Apparently his district does block blogs. According to him, … Read More “Blocking Blogs” »

Unexpected Sharing

EdTech, General Technology

While I was in Atlanta at NECC, I fired up iTunes at my hotel.  I was quite surpirsed to see that someone had shared their iPod library.  I was even more suprised that I could access all 12.5 GB of his music.  I could listen to it, but couldn’t copy or do anything else. This … Read More “Unexpected Sharing” »

NECC 2007 Aftermath

Posted on June 27, 2007 By Tom No Comments on NECC 2007 Aftermath
EdTech, Travel

The last day of NECC, and Homer and I really wanted to catch a couple more sessions on open source software for classrooms. Our previous session on iPods was jam-packed, and ran a bit long. Subsequently, we were later than we might have liked in getting to the session on Wikis. It was already just … Read More “NECC 2007 Aftermath” »

NECC Day Four – iPods in the Classroom

Posted on June 27, 2007 By Tom No Comments on NECC Day Four – iPods in the Classroom
EdTech, Travel

The process of checking out of the hotel and getting the car loaded caused us to miss our first session this morning. Homer and I had been getting several requests for information about podcasts, so we decided to attend a session about iPods. First, I’ve got mixed feelings about podcasts.  I think they have the … Read More “NECC Day Four – iPods in the Classroom” »

Pittypat’s Porch

EdTech, Restaurants, Travel

Tonight we were invited to join several of our colleagues and one of our vendors at Pittypat’s Porch for a meal.  Richard Darrell from Synrevoice likes to select a restaurant that typifies the cuisine of the host city for his client dinners.  Since we are in Atlanta, his research led us to Pittypat’s as the … Read More “Pittypat’s Porch” »

Encounters with the Familiar

EdTech, Travel

At conferences like NECC it’s always a dilemma to select activities.  There is always SO much going on, and often what I want to see happens simultaneously with other sessions I want to attend.  Fortunately, many of the sessions are being podcast, so I may try to download a few of those that I missed … Read More “Encounters with the Familiar” »

Does it really show that much?

Posted on June 26, 2007 By Tom No Comments on Does it really show that much?
EdTech, Travel

Usually I like to play the game of "pick out the teacher."  They are so easy to spot, and I like trying to catch them out in the wild – on the streets of the conference town.  Today I had the tables turned. During a lunch discussion with a couple of attendees from Arkansas, I … Read More “Does it really show that much?” »
