Orphaned Graveyard – South Saluda Baptist

Grunge effect #3

One of the orphaned graveyards on my list belonged to the South Saluda Baptist Church in northern Greenville County. The church was located in what is now the Tall Pines Heritage Preserve.

I visited this site two years ago, in February of 2019. At that time we found the graveyard in terrible disarray, with several of the headstones covered by fallen trees and debris. I haven’t had a chance to return to see if SCDNR has cleaned up the area. I know that Find-a-Grave still has nothing on the cemetery.

I think I did a pretty good job researching the graveyard and the church congregation on that previous visit. I did want to make sure that this was included with my list of orphaned graveyards, so I’ve included a link to that post below:

Buried in the Tall Pines

When the weather clears a bit I will try to head back up that way to see if there have been any changes at the site. If so, I’ll update this post with that information.

    Hi,

We visited this cemetery in May 2021 and it is probably in worse shape than when you were there in 2019. The storms that went through the area in the past couple of years have brought down more trees. As we scrambled through the rhodo/laurels, we kept finding graves – some with just unmarked stone and several more with the metal temporary markers that funeral homes will place. We found one where the paper was in excellent shape considering it was 60 yrs old. Information on the paper — “Mrs. Mary Jane Earle died April 15, 1948. Aged 62 years. C. C. Walker Funeral Home, Greenville, SC”. I have a photo of it. It was near other temp markers but back in some laurel away from the other large permanent headstones.
