Metal Head

Strange sensations coming over me
Something I can’t explain
Suddenly there’s an endless void where I used to keep my brain
I gotta see a doctor, but I’m too wasted to phone one
Wanna customize my van and I don’t even own one

Ah, ah, ah, Oh!
I’m turning into a heavy metal head
Ah, ah, ah
I’m turning into a heavy metal head

Metal head, I’m a metal head and I wanna rock and roll

–“Metalhead” from Combo Akimbo by Blotto

Taylor’s Axiom states that “For every situation in life there exists at least one song or bastardization thereof.” Apparently this holds true, even for occasions such as having to get adult braces. I left for work a (semi-)normal person this morning, and arrived at my office a metal head.

Due to a long list of circumstances that I won’t go into right now, I got braces on my teeth this morning. The process of getting them installed was one of the most unpleasant dental experiences I’ve ever had. My mouth was propped open at a weird angle, and I found it hard to breathe. I had my iPod to try to tune things out, but my orthodontist kept insisting on talking to me and giving me instructions. The nerve.

The final result looks and feels weird. I guess I’ll have to live with it for the next eighteen months, and hope that the end results justify the expense and inconvenience.

I guess it stands to reason – I wear a brace on my elbow for tendonitis, I’ve got braces for my knee and ankle when they go out of whack. So why not my teeth? I just hope I don’t find anything else that needs bracing in the near future.
