Last night we watched Enemy of the State, starring Will Smith, Gene Hackman, and Jon Voight. This movie was made in 1998, pre-9/11, and watching it in today’s climate was downright scary. The basic premise is that a Congressman is murdered because of his refusal to support a bill that authorizes the government to initiate wiretaps and spy on anyone it pleases with very little oversight. Sound familiar? The only difference is that in the movie this is Congress trying to get such power, when our real-life megalomaniac president has just assumed such powers for himself.
There were other interesting points in the movie that I had missed on previous viewings. I kept hearing the reference to keyhole satellites, but had never made their connection to Google Earth and its popular discussion forum.
Regardless, this movie strikes a very different chord given today’s current events.
