Heavy Processing on Falls Park

Posted on April 13, 2008 By Tom 2 Comments on Heavy Processing on Falls Park
Local, Photography

This morning the dark sky served to throw the brilliant colors of azaleas, dogwoods, flowers, and the newly green leaves of trees into stark relief. Even with a threat of rain, I thought it might be a good time to go out and get some photos. I fell back into default mode, and headed downtown. … Read More “Heavy Processing on Falls Park” »

Yep, you heard right. W Hisself will be the commencement speaker at Furman University on May 31. Apparently our Governor, Mark Sanford, put in the request to the President to come to Furman. Sanford is a classmate of mine. We both graduated from Furman in 1983, when the elder Bush spoke at graduation while still … Read More “George W. @ Furman” »

Neighborhood Update and a Bit of Spring

It finally cleared off a bit, so I decided to go for a walk around our neighborhood. First, I got distracted by the tulips growing in our own front yard. I stopped to take a few shots as they were back lit by the afternoon sun. My walk took me to the new cul-du-sac at … Read More “Neighborhood Update and a Bit of Spring” »

Life Sketches and Sermons

Local, Religion

Last week I mentioned about my chance encounter with a book in the South Carolina Room of the Greenville County Library. I had picked up a random book off the shelf entitled “Life Sketches and Sermons” by “Reverend N. J. Holmes and wife” and had opened it to a random page to find my grandmother’s … Read More “Life Sketches and Sermons” »

Library Encounters and Dilemmas

I popped by the main branch of the Greenville County Library this morning, ostensibly to see if they had a recording of Brahms’ Ein Deutches Requiem, since I’m performing it in two weeks. As frequently happens when I visit, I find other things that catch my attention. This time it was a set of CDs … Read More “Library Encounters and Dilemmas” »

No Smoking @ Gene’s

Local, Miscellaneous, Restaurants

This past week the South Carolina State Supreme Court upheld the City of Greenville’s ordinance banning smoking in restaurants and other public establishments within the city limits. While I’m delighted that the ban has been upheld, I got to see another side of it first hand this morning. I tried to go out for breakfast … Read More “No Smoking @ Gene’s” »

Exploring Laurens County

Laurens County Courthouse

It’s Spring Break this week, and the weather stinks out loud. Monday and Tuesday were cloudy and wet, so I spent the first part of the week on home maintenance, specifically, oiling our unfinished knotty pine paneling with linseed oil. It was a smelly job, so by Wednesday I really needed to get out of the house. Wednesday was also the only day this week predicted to have good weather, so it was now or never.

As with most of my photo drives, I only had a rough idea of where I wanted to go. I knew that I wanted to check out the Gray Court-Owings Historical Society’s new display area, and I wanted to visit some sites for genealogy purposes, but apart from that anything was open. Originally, I had planned to load my mountain bike in my truck and check out the Enoree Passage of the Palmetto Trail. However, with the weather not cooperating, I abandoned that idea.

Local, Travel

Laura and I wanted to get out and about this weekend, and we decided we would visit the Congaree National Park. We drove down Friday night so that we could get and early start the next morning. We had a nice dinner in Columbia’s Vista neighborhood, then spent the night in one of the rattiest … Read More “Congaree Swamp Hike” »

William Walker Singing – video

Entertainment, Local, Music

I tried my hand at editing a bit of video from the William Walker Singing last Saturday. I used just the basic version of the Pinnacle Studio software, and was actually pleased with the results. I find it much easier to work with than the Windows Movie Maker software. This clip shows Bill Burns leading … Read More “William Walker Singing – video” »

William Walker Memorial Singing

Local, Music

Saturday morning I attended the William Walker Memorial Singing at Wofford College. William “Singing Billy” Walker was the publisher of The Southern Harmony in 1835 and Christian Harmony in 1866, as well as a composer of many of the tunes found in these. He was a native of Union County, but lived and worked in … Read More “William Walker Memorial Singing” »
