Yep, you heard right. W Hisself will be the commencement speaker at Furman University on May 31. Apparently our Governor, Mark Sanford, put in the request to the President to come to Furman. Sanford is a classmate of mine. We both graduated from Furman in 1983, when the elder Bush spoke at graduation while still Vice-President. Here’s a link to Furman’s press release.

Laura said that some of the faculty aren’t happy about this at all, and there have been some heated e-mail exchanges. Her comment was that this was a done deal, and that public squabbling just puts Furman in a bad light. Hmmm, sounds very much like another protest I’ve been following recently…

Yet, like him or not, this certainly does put the spotlight on Furman, and all-in-all I think good will come of it in terms of recognition. I’m just glad I don’t have to go sit through it.
