Summer Solstice on Key Largo

Waiting for sunset on the longest day of the year…

key largo sunset

…although, I think tomorrow at 12:13 PM is actually the solstice.

Our car has now been completely across the country diagonally, from the Florida Keys to the extreme Pacific Northwest.  The drive southward from Amy’s was uneventful, albeit rainy, and we got to the Keys a little bit after lunch.  We drove on past the hotel, and well into the Keys, enjoying the views of water and boats.  The heat was oppressive, but the views were spectacular.

Back to the hotel, we found that they had been without power for a couple of hours.  There had also been a propane leak earlier in the day, and much of the hotel had been evacuated.  Not a good omen, and the staff was frazzled.  Despite being frazzled, I was impressed with their professional demeanor and efficiency.  The Mariott (at least this one) hires good people.

Our room is incredible.  It’s on the corner and has a balcony that overlooks both the pool and the bay side of the island…

We relaxed by the pool while another storm developed to the west, then had an excellent dinner at the local restaurant.  The evening was spent waiting for that extended sunset.
