More Cities for Street View

Geocaching and Maps

It’s been a busy week, and I somehow let this slip past me. On October 10 Google released imagery for several more cities as part of its StreetView project. The list of cities now includes the following:

  • New York
  • Philadelphia
  • Pittsburgh
  • Chicago
  • Orlando
  • Miami
  • Houston
  • Denver
  • Phoenix
  • Tucson
  • Las Vegas
  • San Diego
  • Los Angeles
  • San Francisco
  • Portland, OR

Of these, San Francisco still has the highest level of detail. I guess the area next to Google Headquarters gets preferential treatment. The others are still fascinating. Having lived in Tucson for a year, it was fun to “drive” past our old apartment and around familiar landmarks such as San Xavier del Bac. I was even able to find the “No-tel Motel”, a notorious establishment located at the corner of Grant and Oracle.

I wonder what other cities will be targeted for StreetView treatment. Surely Seattle, D. C. and Atlanta can’t be far behind. It would also be interesting to see New Orleans in StreetView, even with the lingering Katrina damage. What I would really love to see them do is to include a very rural area, perhaps like Gray Court, SC.
