Grandpa, What Was Snow Like?

Well, Sally, you have to remember that back then temperatures used to get down into the 20s and 30s during winter.  We used to spend more time outside during summer than we did in winter.  That’s all different now…

I was beginning to wonder if winter was ever going to get here.  Last Sunday night we were throwing a frisbee in the Kaup’s back yard late into the evening wearing only short-sleeve shirts.  That all changed as the week progressed.  California got record cold temps, and Southern Cal was baffled by a very rare snowstom.

As for our area, things really started changing Tuesday.  On my way to work the temperature was 58.  At lunch it had dropped to 55, and by the time I was going home it had dropped to the mid-40’s.  That brings us today, Thursday morning.  A wintry mix is falling, and a winter storm warning is in effect for our area.

With the weather uncertain, our district is on a two-hour delay.  I really hate those.  I usually just get up and go in at the regular time, weather permitting.  In this case, the weather is supposed to deteriorate throughout the day.  I’m hoping we don’t get the kids to school just in time for the bad stuff to start.

Making a decision in iffy weather is always a no-win situation from an administrative standpoint.  Calling off school always has repercussions for parents in day care, etc.  Unless the weather is really bad, the parents won’t have the day off.  We will always have folks questioning our decisions.  However, we always make the decision to err on the side of safety.
