Digital Natives – Thumb Evolution

I was checking e-mail on my Blackberry and typing with my thumbs, when Laura relayed and observation made by our friends, John & Sandy.  They have two kids (pictured above) who are true digital natives.  Sandy noticed that the kids tend to do everything with their thumbs as opposed to their index fingers.  Pressing elevator buttons, microwave buttons, and other things we might normally do with our index finger, they do with their thumbs.

This was really evident during the ice storm last winter.  John has an old rotary phone, and the kids tried to dial it with their thumbs.  It took them several tries to figure it out and get it right.

I guess this is an indicator of a new direction in human evolution.  Assuming the control mechanisms stay constant over the next few generations, we could expect to see thumbs elongate and become almost equal with the index finger.
