First full choir rehearsal at Fourth on my own. Things went well, except… Sunday’s Anthem: "How Can I Keep from Singing?" Quaker hymn made famous by Enya. Today’s News from Florida: Choir refuses to stop singing and must be removed by authorities. The pastor of a Charlotte Harbor church had 16 church members booted from … Read More “Cosmic convergence” »

Yippee!!! The score almost changed with seconds to go, as App State made a field goal attempt. Fortunately, they missed.
I wish someone would talk to the Greenville School District about designing their schools. The new Wade Hampton High School looks like a huge, ugly box. The ugliest part faces the main highway. Go figure. And, of course, this will cause even more run-off into our already overloaded watershed.
The Upstate Beat has a new feature I find intriguing. In the series "Houses of the Holy," one of the Beat’s reviewers (prophets) will anonymously visit a place of worship and report back. There are thousands of houses of worship in the Upstate and our Prophets are sampling them. From time to time one of … Read More “Houses of the Holy” »
Last night I officially met the Fourth Presbyterian choir and had my first rehearsal with them. I don’t start until October 9, but the Wednesday before that is supposed to be a celebration of the tenure of Dr. Kyser, and it would have been awkward for me to follow that with a rehearsal.
Fall officially arrived last week. You couldn’t tell it from the climate around here. Sure, the leaves are falling, but think it’s a case of drought-induced panic rather than seasonal instinct. So I was very surprised when it turned out to be a reporter from the Greenville News. This was the same woman who plastered my picture on the front page several weeks ago. I thought this would once again be about the flooding in our neighborhood, but I was wrong.
The Summer 2005 issue of Furman Magazine had a six-page write-up of Laura’s research in nanotechnology. The issue featured interviews with her, several of her students, and colleagues that are working on the project. It also has images taken with her scanning, tunnelling microscope (STM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Needless to say, I’m quite … Read More “Thinking Small” »
So now we REALLY know why God sent Katrina to destroy New Orleans. It wasn’t because of Southern Decadence or any other form of partying. It was because of their penchant for shrimp and crawdads…
It was possibly the most surreal away game road trip I’ve taken. I picked up my friend Tex from Grapevine, Texas, at the airport, and were joined by Paul W for the trek to Cullowhee for the Furman game against Western Carolina University.
