Yippee!!! The score almost changed with seconds to go, as App State made a field goal attempt.  Fortunately, they missed.

Nobel Chemistry

Science

Sometime back I took one of these cutesy online tests – this time it was a "Nerd Test" to see how nerdy I am.  I don’t dare give you the score, but look at it this way – I keep a blog.  That should say enough.  As I read the questions, it occured to me … Read More “Nobel Chemistry” »

To be continued…

Entertainment

Time was, you could watch a TV show every now and then and not miss too much.  Each episode was a stand alone story, with very little carry-over from one week to the next.  Consistency was the name of the game.  Rarely did one see the phrase, "To be continued…", and when it did happen … Read More “To be continued…” »

Buried in soft peat

Rants

Conversation with Bellsouth tech support: Me:  This site was supposed to be configured for 10 megabit, but the switch is set for 10 megabit burstable to 100.  We don’t have equipment in place to support that, so could you change the switch configuration to match? Vogon:   I’m sorry, but we will need a change … Read More “Buried in soft peat” »

Wade Hampton Correctional Facility

Local, Miscellaneous

I wish someone would talk to the Greenville School District about designing their schools.  The new Wade Hampton High School looks like a huge, ugly box.  The ugliest part faces the main highway.  Go figure. And, of course, this will cause even more run-off into our already overloaded watershed.

The Tyranny of Gannett

Local, Rants

My favorite weekly freebie, The Beat, was mercilessly run out of business several months ago while in its incarnation as MetroBeat.  The culprit, of course, was the megalithic Gannett News Corporation, and it’s local shill, The Greenville News.  The Greenville Cage Liner started it’s own weekly rag called, The Link, which went head to head … Read More “The Tyranny of Gannett” »

No. Really!

Uncategorized

Sometime back I did a review of Market Deli, and a subsequent sign after they had closed.  We were at the Taco Hell next door this evening, and spotted this…   At least they have a sense of humor.   I guess the other guys just couldn’t get it back together.

Houses of the Holy

Miscellaneous, Religion

The Upstate Beat has a new feature I find intriguing.  In the series "Houses of the Holy," one of the Beat’s reviewers (prophets) will anonymously visit a place of worship and report back. There are thousands of houses of worship in the Upstate and our Prophets are sampling them. From time to time one of … Read More “Houses of the Holy” »

Writing Towards Home

Entertainment, Local

Last night we attended a writer’s symposium at Furman entitled "Writing Towards Home".  The symposium featured Ashley Warlick, Tommy Hayes, Mindy Friddle, and George Singleton, all of whom have novels set in Upstate South Carolina. The symposium was well attended by the literazzi of Greenville – mostly writer wannabees and some eccentrics.  It was almost … Read More “Writing Towards Home” »

Pyramids of Giza in Google Earth

Geocaching and Maps

For some strange reason this website has gotten several hits from Google with the search terms "Google Earth" and "Pyramids."  I’m assuming that folks are looking for the latitude and longitude of the Great Pyramids in Google Earth.  Well, here’s how you do it… First open Google Earth, then double-click on the Sight-Seeing folder under … Read More “Pyramids of Giza in Google Earth” »
