Thursday is the New Friday

Posted on November 10, 2005 By Tom No Comments on Thursday is the New Friday
Miscellaneous, Music

…at least, in a relative sense.  I haven’t dropped to a four-day week – quite the contrary.  With Chorale rehearsals Monday night, church staff meetings and planning Tuesday night, and choir rehearsal Wednesday night, I’ve started looking forward to obligation-free Thursday evenings. Last night I think I finally got beyond the choir’s comfort level and … Read More “Thursday is the New Friday” »

Walking a Thin Line

Miscellaneous

I’ve decided that the macro lens on the Nikon S1 is its best feature, apart from its tiny size.  The image above was taken this afternoon. Weekend Update:  Furman lost to GSU 24-27 in a heartbreaker.  I watched the game on TV while chatting online with my UFFP pals.  On Sunday things went very smoothly.  … Read More “Walking a Thin Line” »

Half-Assed Half Mast

Local, Rants

Our illustrious Governor Mark Sanford, who also happens to be a former Furman classmate of mine, has once again found himself on the negative end of the news.  Sanford is catching flack for not ordering state flags to half-mast in honor of Rosa Parks.  Apparently Parks does not fall within that narrowly defined group of … Read More “Half-Assed Half Mast” »

Fireballs for Real

Well, it seems that the fireball wasn’t a figment of my imagination.  The Taurids apparently put on quite a show all over the place.  Here’s the scoop from NASA… November 3, 2005: "I thought some wise guy was shining a spotlight at me," says Josh Bowers of New Germany, Pennsylvania. "Then I realized what it … Read More “Fireballs for Real” »

I’ll Have a Little Ice Cream with That

Miscellaneous, Recipes

Tried a new concoction last night. Laura had discovered a wonderful flavor of Edy’s Grand Ice Cream – Espresso Chip. I drizzled a some Kahlua liquor over the top, and created a new taste. You only need a touch – a little of it goes a long way.

Second Day Syndrome

Posted on November 1, 2005 By Tom No Comments on Second Day Syndrome
EdTech

Laura used to say that her muscles never got sore the day after strenous exercise.  It was always the second day after that felt worse.  I think the same can be said for recovering from vacations, or from any extended work absence.  Yesterday was relatively quiet, lulling me into a false sense of security.  Today … Read More “Second Day Syndrome” »

Halloween Fireball

Posted on November 1, 2005 By Tom No Comments on Halloween Fireball
Miscellaneous

I know it wasn’t my imagination.  As I was driving home from rehearsal last night I saw a brilliant fireball streak across the sky.  It was greenish, and particles fell from its firey path.  Because the trajectory, I’m fairly sure it wasn’t someone’s fireworks gone awry.  However, given the date, I’m not willing to rule … Read More “Halloween Fireball” »

Jack-O-Lantern

Now I remember why jack-o-lanterns have triangle eyes and jagged mouths.  Straight lines are easier to carve into the thick, thick pumpkin skin.

Black Cats and Halloween

Miscellaneous

I’ve tried hard to not make this a cat blog.  Yeah, we’ve got lots of cats, but I don’t feel compelled to disclose every detail of their existence.  However, we had a  bit of a fright recently.  When we returned from Seattle, our black cat, Shadow, was missing for about 48 hours.  We called, I … Read More “Black Cats and Halloween” »

Remember the Sabbath

Miscellaneous, Religion

It’s days like these that remind me why I retired from church work in the first place.  It is an absolutely glorious October Sunday, with a cool bite to the air.  The sun casts long rays heightening contrasts and color.  I’m tempted to grab my camera, but laziness and a third cup of coffee hold … Read More “Remember the Sabbath” »
