The World According to Google

EdTech, General Technology, Geocaching and Maps

I have just spent every free minute of this weekend touring the world, courtesy of Google Earth. This has got to be the coolest program I’ve seen in a long time.

Another View of the Tuckaseegee

Paddling

It seems that we have run the Tuckaseegee more than the Green this summer. The crowds of float bubbas have gotten so obnoxious that we’re willing to drive the extra miles to get to the Tuck.

Technology Boot Camp, Part II

EdTech

Forget what I said yesterday about the relevancy of a Tech Boot Camp for today’s teachers. Ours went extremely well today, and we got a tremendous amount of feedback that would support continuing with our present strategy.

Technology Boot Camp

EdTech

For the past five years, we have had a “Technology Boot Camp” in our district for new employees. I started this so that all teachers would start off with good, consistent training in our system so that they could jump right in. Originally, the Boot Camp was a two-day affair, and covered things such as policies & procedures, the district e-mail system, technology resources in the district, basic computer operations, and integration of technology into lesson plans. As we evaluate the program each year, we have trimmed the Boot Camp, and this year I’m beginning to question its effectiveness.

A Thousand Words

Miscellaneous, Photography

In previous posts I have lamented my lack of photography skills. Anytime I find someone who has an artistic eye as well as the skills, I once again lapse into self-loathing of my own meager abilities. Such was the case when I stumbled across Brent Crawford’s new Flickr account.

Maybe we’ve passed??

Restaurants

We were at Taco Bell on Wade Hampton, next door to the Market Square Deli.  The deli has been closed for some time, supposedly undergoing renovations.  However, restaurant equipment has been sitting out in the weather for nearly a week.  The past week, this sign has been out in front. Maybe we’ve passed??  What does … Read More “Maybe we’ve passed??” »

Must Love Contrivances

Entertainment

I have come to believe that romantic comedies are set in an alternate universe where the laws of probability no longer apply. These laws are skewed such that it is almost certain that the protagonist will run into exactly the right person at the right time, or exactly the wrong person at the right time. With a two-hour time constraint, there can be no gray area. Some movies do a great job of concealing this alternate universe of improbabilities with very clever plot twists. Some don’t, as is the case with Must Love Dogs.

Island Blend Jerk & BBQ

Restaurants

It’s my last free Friday for the summer. Next week we go back on our regular schedule, which on the plus side means shorter days Monday through Thursday. At least once during the summer, now on my free Fridays, I like to wander downtown, look in the shops, and try a new place to eat. On this rainy Friday I selected Island Blend Jerk and BBQ.

It’s really coming down out there! As opposed to going up??
