How’s the House, Part 3

You may have noticed a lack of posts here lately. I’ve had some posts started, but lately my mental state has just not been up to writing. Call it depression, PTSD, or whatever. I’ve been getting out and doing lots of things, but the motivation to write just hasn’t been there. Today I’ve come down with an annoying head cold, so I thought it would be a good time to catch up.

First, how’s the house?

We’re coming up on 11 months since Hurricane Helene, and we’re still in temporary housing. Things are happening, but not at the pace we would prefer. Most of the exterior work has been completed, but still needs painting.

A couple of weeks ago we passed the rough-in inspection and we were able to get the power turned back on. That meant we could get the new AC going in our basement.

Last week they completed the drywall and this week they started painting the ceilings. We’re hoping the walls will be finished this week.

The biggest holdup right now is that the large sliding doors on the bonus room have to be special ordered.

Right now it’s taking longer than we had hoped, and it’s put a hold on everything everything else. They can’t put the front door on because that’s how they have to bring in the sliding doors. They can’t finish the flooring until they get those doors installed. They can’t install the cabinets and counters until the floors are done.

So, it looks like we’ll be out of the house for awhile longer. Could be much, much worse, though. One of our neighbors was telling me about a house across the lake. They lost 19 trees, one of which took out a large portion of the roof. Their insurance company initially declared it a total loss, so they didn’t tarp it or do a temporary rebuild like they did with ours. Now their insurance company is saying they are going to repair it, but the owners can’t find a contractor who will touch it. These poor folks have been bouncing from AirBnB to AirBnB for the last year. I can’t imagine. It makes me appreciate our insurance company and contractors that much more, despite how long it’s taking.
