EdTech 2007 – Arrival

It’s that time of year again. Once more, I’m headed to the armpit of the state (Myrtle Beach) for EdTech 2007, our annual technology conference. This year is going to be especially busy for several reasons. I had funds to bring all of my tech team down. We are basically leaving our district helpless, so I’m hoping no servers blow up in our absence. Also this year, I’m giving three presentations on Google Earth in the classroom – two with Andrea Thorpe from SCETV, and one on my own. I think most of my time at the conference will be spent preparing for these.

The drive down was uneventful. It always takes longer to get here than I imagine. The place I’m staying this year is spectacular. I’ve got an oceanfront suite with full kitchen, dining room, living room, and bedroom. It’s amazing what you can get for fairly cheap in the off-season. It also helps that it’s not Bike Week this year, like it has been in the past. I’d almost rather hang out on my balcony and watch the waves, but I guess I am down here on business.

For the first night on my own, I usually drive down to Flo’s at Murrell’s Inlet for dinner. This year, I drove right past Flo’s to a place called Creek Ratz. It looked interesting, and I was ready for something different. I had actually typed up notes for a review, but decided it wasn’t worth it. I left hungry and disappointed.

As the sun came up this morning, I sat on the balcony with laptop and camera, trying to capture the colors. I was working on my geotagging presentation, so I had Google Earth open and was seeing what images might have been tagged for the Myrtle Beach area. I began to wonder how many photos there are already of beach sunrises, surf, and seagulls. Despite the beauty of the moment, I decided to put the camera away.
