Google Conquers the World

In the last post I mentioned discoveries in Flickr, which is a Yahoo company.  It seems that Google has also been making noises about a product similar to Flickr.  As reported on the Google Earth Blog, Picassa Web is now available in beta format.  Furthermore,  Google Earth can be used to geotag Picassa images directly.

I haven’t seen this yet, but you also get a network link so you can view where your photos were taken in Google Earth and then look at the photos with the placemarks! This is like the old Flickr geoblogger network link on steroids and built in to two of the best Google applications out there: Google Picasa and Google Earth!

If that were true, then this is going to be a wonderful development.   However, the demo I’ve seen from Picassa looks like it lacks much of the social functionality that makes Flickr so much fun.  I’m sure those things will come, but they have a good bit of catching up to do.  At this time, Picassa Web accounts are only available by invitation at this point.

And speaking of Google Earth, a new version has been released with a new look and feel.  Along with this version Google also released a new set of high resolution satellite imagery.  Now the western part of Greenville is in high res along with the eastern part.  If only they could get downtown focused…
