One thing I’ll give MB.  It has some great places to eat breakfast.  Actually, lots of places.  During our meal, we made made our day’s travel plans.  Laura’s goal was to have driven the entire length of the SC coast by the end of this trip, so our plan was to first drive north, then retrace back to Georgetown where we would spend the night.

We kept as close to the ocean as possible while heading north.  A cloudy drizzle kept us company most of the way.   Laura conceded that MB didn’t look as bad as she remembered.  We both think she has just gotten acclimated to Atlantic Coast beaches.

There were a few surprises on the drive north.  Oceanside Atlantic Beach is a ghetto.  All of the buildings are run down and boarded up.  Looks like great potential for some developer.  From Calabash to Ocean Isles Beach was quite pleasant.  The wide beaches and neat houses reminded me of the Outer Banks.  The sun was out once again, so after a quick beach walk, and finding a fantastic shell, we decided to head south agin.

The trip south was uneventful.  We stopped at the Pawley’s Island Hammock Shops, and Laura found a garden googah.  We drove out to the Island, proper.   It was neat, but by that time we were tired of diving by beach houses, andthe scenery was getting to be to much of the same thing.  We took a minute or two on the beach at the end of the island.

On a Sunday in January, everything closes up in Georgetown   It was almost deserted.  We found a non-descript Hampton Inn, then headed out again to explore.  We were looking for a wildlife refuge, but the one we saw on the map required a reservation ahead of time.  We finally found a neat trail next to the Santee River.  It would have been perfect, except that most of the trail was closed for hunting season.  I think we’ll be back.

We had to drive all the way back to Pawley’s to find dinner, but after an early meal, we headed to the room to watch the NFL finals.
