Welcome to the Working Week

..and what a week it has been.  In the course of seven days I have entertained my brother at my house, gone to see Michael Frayn’s “Copenhagen”, kayaked the Green River, and lost miserably at bowling – all this while battling a cold and fever.  I had all these wonderfully pithy entries I was going to write for each of these events, by the time evening rolled around, or I had time to write, I instead usually just collapsed with the lingering dry aftertaste of Robitussin.  Add to that the fact that this website hasn’t been working half the time, and it’s no wonder I haven’t added any entries lately.

As far as the working week is concerned, June 30 is the end of our fiscal year.  Since I’m going to be at NECC next week in Philadelphia, the past two weeks have been a frantic effort to get all of those end-of-year reports, etc., done.  Complain, complain, complain.

Two quick observations…

First, yesterday was the summer solstice, and coincidentally, the full moon.  Secondly, Winn Dixie announced that they were pulling out of South Carolina altogether.  The list of viable supermarkets in the area gets smaller and smaller.  Although, when I think about it, it’s not much different when I was young.  We had Winn Dixie, BiLo, and Piggly Wiggly.  For small towns in the Upstate, the choices are not much more diverse.  Perhaps it’s time we made the transition from “supermarket” back to “grocery store.”  Fresh Market and EarthFare seem to have taken that approach.

I had stopped shopping at Winn Dixie because of their inane bonus card program.  Likewise for BiLo, Ingles, and Petsmart.  Publix seems to be the only shop around without one, but they still need competition.  I refuse to shop at Walmart as a matter of principal, and would never list it as a “grocery store.”
