Since we both work and have no kids, we eat out a lot.  I like trying new places, and am happy to pass along my opinions on these new restaurants.  For these reviews, I try to stay away from the obvious chains (Chili’s, Applebees, Wendy’s, and other things ending with a long ee sound.)  I’m also confining my reviews to the general Upstate area.  We’ve had lot’s of fantastic meals on our travels, but I’d rather pass along the cuisine of this area.

Yellow and red

Miscellaneous, Restaurants

I had lunch at our local Wendy’s yesterday. Looking up the street I was struck by something. See if you can spot it… Here. I’ll make it a bit more obvious in this collection of logos… Notice how all of these companies use shades of red and yellow in their logos? One might argue that … Read More “Yellow and red” »

The Slow Death of a Restaurant

Posted on November 11, 2006 By Tom No Comments on The Slow Death of a Restaurant
Restaurants

This evening we stopped by one of our favorite restaurants and noticed some disturbing things.  I won’t say which restaurant, or even the type of cuisine, should some of these comments come back to haunt me.  However, all of these things add up to only one conclusion – this place won’t be around for much … Read More “The Slow Death of a Restaurant” »

Greek Grille at Cherrydale

Restaurants

NOTE: This restaurant is now closed. We have been to the Greek Grille at Cherrydale Point several times.  This particular evening we wanted good food fast because we had tickets to the Little Theater, and thought this would fit the bill. Atmosphere The Greek Grille is small, with only a few booths and tables.  The … Read More “Greek Grille at Cherrydale” »

Caro-Mi

Local, Restaurants

Tomorrow is the autumnal equinox.  To celebrate the first day of fall, I joined Glynda, Mom, and Dad in a trip to the Caro-Mi restaurant near Tryon, NC.  It was a beautiful evening, so we were up for a drive to the Pacolet River Valley.  Having never been before, I figured it warranted a review. … Read More “Caro-Mi” »

Frodo’s Pizza

Local, Restaurants

I’m always hesitant to review a restaurant with which I’ve had such a long, long history.  I tend to focus on those places that are new (or at least new to me.)  However, I had opportunity to eat at Frodo’s Pizza twice this week, so I decided it was high time to give them the … Read More “Frodo’s Pizza” »

Pet Pizza Peeve

Rants, Restaurants

One of our favorite Thai restaurants is located right next door to a Papa John’s Pizza place.  Sometimes it’s nearly impossible to find a place to park because all of the spots are taken by pizza delivery cars.  The photo below clearly shows the joint’s attitude toward their own customers (see inset).  You can imagine … Read More “Pet Pizza Peeve” »

Two coffees to go

Posted on August 22, 2006 By Tom No Comments on Two coffees to go
Restaurants

Two drive-through coffee shops have made an appearance in Duncan in the past year.  Both offer similar products, but apart from products, the two couldn’t be more different. The first to make its appearance was Curbside Coffee.  Curbside moved into a defunct Dairy Queen located right next to a huge truck stop right at I-85.  … Read More “Two coffees to go” »

Feasting on Asphalt

OK, I want Alton Brown’s job.  His latest TV show is a four-part series on FoodNetwork called "Feasting on Asphalt."  Alton and his crew ride from the Isle of Palms, SC, to Los Angeles, sampling the local cuisine along the way.  AB and crew have tried to make this a true "blue highways" experience by … Read More “Feasting on Asphalt” »

Meat-n-3.4 : Cafeterias

Restaurants

Dad celebrated his 82nd birthday this week, so this weekend I trekked to Newberry County to take him and Mom out for lunch. I’ve noticed that they prefer cafeterias such as S&S and Picadilly’s, or local eateries that offer buffets.  These places do tend to attract clientele of my parent’s age.  This has always puzzled … Read More “Meat-n-3.4 : Cafeterias” »

The Blue Lagoon

Restaurants, Travel

7/17/06 There will always be the inevitible comparisons between my trip of twenty years ago and this one.  The most obvious is that twenty years ago I was broke.  I may wince at the prices this time around, but at least this time I think  I might be able to have a decent meal every … Read More “The Blue Lagoon” »
