That Grand, Glorious Future

Entertainment, Miscellaneous, Science

BoingBoing featured a link to a collection of French art from 1910 which was supposed to show life in the year 2000. As with most futuristic art from that period, the artist took the familiar and extrapolated what it would become. As with other collections of this sort, some of the images are eerily prescient, … Read More “That Grand, Glorious Future” »

Owings Pioneer Days

Revolutionary Regiment

Today was Pioneer Day in the little community of Owings in upper Laurens County, sponsored by the Gray Court-Owings Historical Society. I hadn’t been back to my old stomping grounds in quite awhile, so I figure this would be a good excuse to head down and take some photographs.

A parade was to begin at 10:00 AM. I arrived about twenty minutes early, but parking was already at a premium. Even this early, turnout was quite good. I watched most of the parade participants walk down the main street so that they could line up for the parade. In fact, I thought it had already started and that I was late. I learned, however, that it was the parade that was late getting started. Soon various historic regiments, horse-drawn carriages, antique cars, and antique tractors processed down the street. The parade took about thirty minutes.

In an open space across from the town several exhibition areas had been set up. There were booths for the Historical Society, and demonstrations of arts and crafts. There were a couple of blacksmiths, someone carving wooden bowls with hand tools, a demonstration of colonial surveying techniques, and cooking demonstrations. The Sons of the Confederacy were out in force, with at least two booths and lots of rebel flags everywhere. Wandering among the booths, I saw many community people I recognized, and some I knew from my time teaching at Gray Court-Owings School.

I wandered into the little museum that the Society maintains and was amazed at how many artifacts I recognized without even having to look at the labels. There were items from Gray Court-Owings School, as well as from the local stores. I saw some goods and fixtures from the old Bryson and Stoddard General Store. When I visited the store as a child, Mr. Stoddard was already 93 years old, and the store was a step back in time.

Thirteen Moons and a Thousand Suns

I just finished reading Charles Frazier’s Thirteen Moons. Next on my reading list is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Kahled Hosseini. This is one of the best literary pairings I’ve come across in a long time. The two books share many traits, beyond the obvious astronomical references in the titles. This is the second book … Read More “Thirteen Moons and a Thousand Suns” »

Darts and Horseshoes

Each year the Furman Summer Indergraduate Research Program has an Ironman/Ironwoman competition. There are the typical track and field vents, but there are some that those of us who are less athletically inclined can master. These include table tennis, bowling, darts, and horseshoes. Last night we had the darts and horseshoe competition at the Hanks/Veas … Read More “Darts and Horseshoes” »

Bereite dich zu leben!

I think I can safely say, without giving away any spoilers, that the overriding theme of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows deals with Harry’s coming to terms with his own mortality.  Those lessons have hit home in numerous ways this week.  First there are the subtle, constant reminders of the unrelenting passage of time … Read More “Bereite dich zu leben!” »

Entertainment, Recipes

Brian Goess has a quest.  Brian’s goal is to cook every recipe in the magazine Cook’s Illustrated.  Occasionally, he brings along others to share in the triumphs and tragedies.  Tonight was the second of our dinner-and-a-movie ventures with Furman connections.  Several of the chemistry faculty gathered to try the Cook’s Illustrated version of easy gyros. … Read More “Dinner and a Movie – Part Two” »

Painter of Light

No, I’m not talking about that paint-by-numbers buffoon Thomas Kincaid. I’m talking about a true master – Andrew Wyeth.  The Greenville County Museum of Art has been featuring an exhibition entitled "Wyeth at 90."  This collection includes highlights from each decade of Wyeth’s career. Laura and I made our visit on this rainy Saturday afternoon.  … Read More “Painter of Light” »

At least once during the summer we have Laura’s research group over for dinner and a movie. Since Laura is doing a collaborative project with one of her colleagues, this year the group has doubled. We grilled burgers and let the kids select a movie from our DVD collection. Each year Beloit College presents it’s … Read More “Dinner and a Movie – Part One” »

Deathly Hallows

It would have been better with rain. Instead, the sun shown, and the humidity was low, compelling me outdoors for chores and activities. However, I was enthralled. I read "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" straight through, pausing only for some exercise and essentials. I finished it at about 2:15 this afternoon. Now I … Read More “Deathly Hallows” »

Pottermania – Part Five

Between the movie and the release party, we decided to run home for the interim.  Having ridden my bike and been fairly active all day, I was tired.  I manage to fend off sleep though, and at 11:30 we headed out again.  Last release party it was crowded, and we had no clue what to … Read More “Pottermania – Part Five” »
