First Friday

Posted on December 1, 2006 By Tom No Comments on First Friday

It’s Friday night, which has become "date night" for Laura and I.  We started with a wonderful dinner at Brick City Grille, then headed downtown for the First Friday art gallery tour.

Our first stop turned out to be the best.  We began with the West End Gallery. This small gallery has some of the best works of art.  We were particularly drawn to the works of Virginia Dauth and Robert Cook.  While Dauth’s larger works were quite nice, we liked the smaller works better.  Cook’s stark landscapes really caught our eye, and we stood for awhile seriously contemplating a $1500 purchase.  We resisted.

We continued down South Main and stopped into a couple more galleries, but they seemed like a letdown compared to what we had seen at West End.  Lately I’ve paid attention to the art photography.  As I had observed at the Open Studios weekend, a couple of the exhibits looked like something I could do.

Each of the galleries had impressive spreads of wine and cheese, but we were still stuffed from our lavish dinner.  We did partake of a caffe mocha from "Spill the Beans", then headed back to the car.

Our last stop for the evening was Piazzo Bergamo downtown.  There had obviously been more happening earlier in the evening.  There were several booths set up as a Bavarian village, and snow was falling.  A snow machine had been set up on the roof of one of the nearby buildings.  Of course, it melted almost immediately in this near-70 degree weather.

All-in-all, it was quite an enjoyable date night.
