Shirley Bassey @ 71

On NPR’s Morning Edition last Saturday Scott Simon had an interview with Dame Shirley Bassey on the occasion of her 71st birthday and the release of a new CD. Bassey is best known for singing the theme song from the James Bond Movie Goldfinger, but has many other recognizable hits, in addition to two other Bond songs.

In the interview, Bassey said that a group of young women apparently wanted to turn her into a “rock chick.” Even at 71 Bassey certainly has the flair and vivaciousness to pull it off. Indeed, back in 1998 she collaborated with Propellerheads on the song “History Repeating,” proving she has the chops as a rocker.

The new CD, entitled “Get This Party Started”, is a collection of covers and remakes, including one of her most famous hits, “Hey, Big Spender.” I personally like the title track better than the original version by Pink. Bassey just puts much more style into it.

I found the video for “Get This Party Started” on YouTube. Bassey is as lively as ever. The visuals are reminiscent of Edward Gorey’s artwork, but in live-action format.

I haven’t bought this one yet, but as soon as I can find a copy, I’m going to add it to our collection of party music.
