Creative Uses of GPS

Posted on April 11, 2008 By Tom No Comments on Creative Uses of GPS
Gear, General Technology, Geocaching and Maps

Forget geocaching and geotagging. Some folks are coming up with even more creative ways of using GPS technology. The New York Times ran an article about some of these new uses, which basically involve tracking valuables. Kathy Besa of Broomall, Pa., has a device about the size of a pocket pager attached to the collar … Read More “Creative Uses of GPS” »

Total Cost of Ownership

Posted on April 9, 2008 By Tom 1 Comment on Total Cost of Ownership
EdTech, Gear

It’s a tight budget year. We’re trying to build two schools and a new fine arts center. Add to that the fact that we’re facing funding cuts and inflation, and our education dollars just aren’t going as far as they once did. Despite these pressures, I keep getting requests from principals and department heads for additional computers. I would love to provide them everything they want, but the funds will only go so far.

So, at our last principals meeting I tried to impress upon our staff all of the costs involved in putting one computer on our school’s network. This was nowhere near as comprehensive as the Gartner Group’s Total Cost of Ownership calculations, but it got the point across. I thought it might be worthwhile to repeat it here.

One-time costs:

  • Hardware – computer and monitor
  • Extended Warranty
  • MS-Office Licensing – we purchase a copy for each new computer as needed
  • Deployment – setup, unboxing, imaging, asset tags
  • Curriculum software licensing

Recurring costs:

  • Antivirus
  • Novell Network and Groupwise e-mail licensing
  • Internet Filtering
  • Anti-Spam software

Other costs:

  • Data port connections – about $200 per active port (usually covered in construction and other costs, but may come into play if additional ports are needed.)
  • Replacement/Refresh Costs – computers are replaced every five years
  • Disposal at end-of-life – involves data security, recycling, hazardous waste disposal, etc.
  • Personnel and support costs

Geotagging Lessons Learned

Gear, Geocaching and Maps

I had taken a couple of pictures at Furman the other day, and geotagged them. I was distressed to find that my RAW files had been corrupted, and I couldn’t use them at all. My trek through Laurens County was the first test of my new Qstarz BT-Q1000 GPS tracker. I clipped it onto my … Read More “Geotagging Lessons Learned” »

One More GPS Tracker – Qstarz BT-Q1000

After the miserable failure of the i-gotU GPS tracker, I decided to ship it back and purchase the Qstarz BT-Q1000 instead. The preliminary tests I’ve run on the unit just bear out the old adage – you get what you pay for. The i-gotU was around $50 and the Qstarz is nearly double that.

This is the updated unit to the one we bought Chip for his birthday. He had been very pleased with its performance, and I had read several other favorable reviews. This unit has double the memory capacity, but otherwise functions pretty much the same way and has the same features.

Qstarz comparison

As can be seen in the photo above, the Qstarz (middle) is a good bit larger than the i-gotU, but still smaller than my Garmen eTrex. It’s still small enough to slip into a pocket, and it comes with a protective cover that has a belt loop.

i-gotU GPS Tracker – Summary Review

UPDATE: This review was for the i-GotU GT-100. Mobile Action has contacted me and asked if I would try out the new GT-120. I’ve tested it, and posted the new results here. So far it’s worked much better than the GT-100 reviewed here, which has now been discontinued by Mobile Action. I’m leaving this review … Read More “i-gotU GPS Tracker – Summary Review” »

Test Driving the i-gotU GPS Tracker

UPDATE: This review was for the i-GotU GT-100. Mobile Action has contacted me and asked if I would try out the new GT-120. I’ve tested it, and posted the new results here. So far it’s worked much better than the GT-100 reviewed here, which has now been discontinued by Mobile Action. I’m leaving this review in place for archival purposes.

I’ve been test-driving the new i-gotU GPS tracker. It’s a tiny little device that looks more like a toy than an actual gadget. The silly name and baby-blue plastic wrapper don’t help that impression much. However, it’s simplicity (as well as its price) were what drew me to this tracker in the first place.

There were several arguments for using a dedicated tracker for geotagging photos as opposed to a handheld GPS. First and foremost is size. The i-gotU unit is small enough that it could be attached to a camera strap so that it’s always with the camera. It won’t get in the way like a larger unit might. Since these trackers don’t have LCD display screens, battery life tends to be much better. Usually data trackers like this have the latest GPS chipsets, so accuracy is improved. In order to see if these arguments held true for the i-gotU, I decided to put the tracker to the test and do a side-by-side comparison with my trusty Garmin eTrex Legend.

New Podcast/Vodcast Gear

Gear

I’ve added a couple of new tools to my arsenal of audio/video equipment. I haven’t really done much with podcasting or vodcasting, but I keep getting more and more requests for information about this. Even if this aren’t used for pod/vodcasting, they will still be great tools for digital storytelling. First, on the left, is … Read More “New Podcast/Vodcast Gear” »

The Perfect GPS Logger

Posted on March 8, 2008 By Tom 1 Comment on The Perfect GPS Logger
Gear, Geocaching and Maps

With all of these photo treks I’ve been taking lately, I’ve been looking into getting a GPS data logger to assist with geotagging. My Garmin eTrex Legend does a nice job, but it’s a bulky battery hog that loses satellite links more often than I would like. When I get out of the car to … Read More “The Perfect GPS Logger” »

I was in Staples the other day and found this little guy sitting in the mark-down bin. I needed a webcam for a couple of projects I’m doing, so I decided that he needed to come home with me. Twelve Must-Have Software Tools

Posted on February 6, 2008 By Tom No Comments on Twelve Must-Have Software Tools
Gear, General Technology, Internet

Every now and then I’ll post a link to a cool new product that I think has promise, such as Jott or Jing. I got to thinking about how many of these I actually use, and which ones just seem cool at the time. I decided to make a list of my must-have software tools. These are the ones I use most on a day-to-day basis.
Some of these tools have been around for awhile and have gotten lots of press, and some are fairly new. I guess I tend to take for granted that everyone knows about Audacity and Firefox, but some may not have. So, some of these on this list will be ones that I’ve discussed at length, and some are those have just glossed over.

Anyone who’s followed this blog knows my hobbies – photography, anything dealing with maps and GPS, computer geekery, music and multimedia design. These tools tend to line up with those interests. What’s not on the list are tools which only function as file readers – Adobe Acrobat Reader and Flash Player, for example. They need to actually do something. Some are for productivity, and some are just for fun. I’ve also left off purely online applications, such as Bloglines, as useful as this might be. All these tools are geared toward the Windows environment (sorry, Mac and Linux folks), however some are cross-platform. I’ve also left off any shareware/crippleware tools with the possible exception of EasyGPS – all are free.

So, without further delay, and in no particular order, here’s my list…
