A Shepherd of Leaves

Lectionary Reading for the Day:

The Lord’s my shepherd, I’ll not want.

And with the morning’s sermon still fresh on my mind, I went out to tackle the latests crop of leaves before the rain makes them heavier and unmanageable this evening.  Laura and I both hit them with duelling leaf blowers.

There is not the same physical connection between leaf and rake when one uses a blower.  I felt as though the leaves had minds of their own, and I was herding them with directed blasts of wind.  I had become a shepherd of leaves, leading them to their eventual fate, whether to be consumed by the fires of refuse, or granted life anew as piles of compost.
