Greenville Farmers Market

Greenville Farmers Market

Every spring and fall the Greenville Farmers Market has a festival. I’m not talking about the one that has sprung up on Main Street downtown (not to take anything away from that market), but the one sponsored by the SC Agricultural Commission on Rutherford Road.  Local growers bring their wares for a two-day sale. Laura and I usually try to make it, and sometimes we even do more than window shop.

Fall Produce

Since this was the fall festival, there were lots of pumpkins, squash, gourds, and other orangish colored bits of vegetation. There also seemed to be an abundance of chrysanthemums this time.

Inside, the produce stand had the last of the summer peaches, and the latest crop of apples, as well as other fall vegetables. In one corner I spotted case upon case of Blenheim Ginger Ale. I was tempted to pick up a case, but resisted.

It seemed like it wasn’t a crowded this time around. I think the spring festival gets a little crazier. Both parking spaces and wagons are hard to come by. This time, there were lots of people, but it wasn’t as frenetic as some times. That may change as the day progresses.

There were several vendors this year with interesting yard art. We could have loaded up our front lawn with pink flamingos, various angels and crosses, and even tacky Clemson junk (is there any other kind?)

I like farmers markets and produce stands, in general. Greenville has several of these, and I think we need to shop at them more often. Keep these local producers in business.
