A new contender has entered the mega-burrito craze. Crazy Burritos on Wade Hampton Boulevard, next to the Open Hearth restaurant, opened a couple of months ago. It looks like this is locally owned and operated, and is not part of any franchise. In fact, when we visited last night, the young Hispanic couple behind the counter were enthusiastic enough and knowledgeable enough about the place to make me think they were the owners. Here’s a quick review…
Atmosphere
Tiny – this is along the lines of a fast food/sandwich shop. You order at the counter (as with the other burrito places I’ve reviewed) and take a seat at one of several booths.
Menu
Burritos are the specialty, but quesadillas and tacos are also on the menu. Fillings include Asada Grille Steak, Ground Beef, Pork with Cactus, Chicken with Spices, Chile Colorado, and Spinach with Vegetables. As with the other burrito places in town, you can get guacamole, beans, rice, and other additions to the burrito.
Food
Laura got the Chicken with Spices on a regular tortilla, and I got the Pork with Cactus on a spinach tortilla. Mine was excellent, on a par with Salsaritas. The vegetables even seemed a touch fresher. Laura said that her chicken was more like the type found at our other local restaurants such as El Molcajete and Monterrey. The pieces in hers were a bit larger than bite-sized, which made for a messier meal. Apparently, they didn’t believe that she wanted it as spicy as she did, because it turned out tamer than she wanted. Mine, on the other hand, was perfectly spicy.
Conclusion
Laura still likes Salsaritas better because of the spices. I think she might change her mind if we can convince them to add enough hot sauce to her burrito. Regardless, it’s nice to have a place like this close by so that we don’t have to drive all the way to Augusta Road, or have to put up with screams of “Welcome to Moe’s!” We will definitely be back.
