It looked like dinner was going to be a problem. Barren County is a dry county. However, Cave City has passed a local exemption, and can serve alcohol. Regardless, it looked like our eating options were limited to a couple of steak houses or fast food.
Our AAA book had listed the Sahara Steak House as one of the only options. On the way in, we had passed it, and we saw no activity, and didn’t look like the type of place we would have stopped. However, thi stime there were several cars parked there, so we decided to give it a shot.
The interior was about as plain and humble as the exterior. The first thing one encountered upon entering was a bar, so we knew we could get drinks.
We started with salads and fried mushrooms as appetizers. Both of these were outstanding, especially the sauce that accompanied the mushrooms. I ordered a steak kabob, and Laura got a small sirloin. Mine had been marinated in bourbon, and served with grilled vegetables. The flavor was excellent, on all counts.
While we were there, the bartender came out and checked on an elderly couple seated behind us. She grabbed the old man’s glasses and took them back and cleaned them for him, then took great pains to make sure they were comfortable and had what they needed. The cashier was also quite friendly and helpful, making recommendations for further explorations in the area.
If all these positive experiences hadn’t been enough to let us know we had made the right choice, we had one more piece of evidence. All the state troupers in the area gathered there for dinner.
