Happy “Multi-Cultural Excuse for a Party” Day!

We celebrated Cinco de Mayo yesterday at our favorite Mexican restaurant, Monterrey. We ordered our usual two small margaritas, and they brought us out an extra one in celebration. Not being much of a drinker, I battled a tequila-induced headache the rest of the evening.

With my throbbing head buried under a pillow, I started thinking about other opportunities for over-indulgence in the name of national pride. We already know about St. Patrick’s Day for Ireland, Bastille Day for France (which I don’t imagine many people will celebrate this year), and Germany has a whole month for debauchery with Octoberfest. Here are some of my favorites from National Holidays.com…

  • Botswana Day – September 230
  • Merdeka Day – Malaysia – August 31
  • King’s Birthday – Thailand – December 5
  • Celebration of the Fight Against Colonization Day – Yemen – October 14
  • St. Lucia Day – December 13
  • Constitution Day – Denmark – June 5
  • Õlavsøka National Day – Faroe Islands – July 29
  • Tynwald Day – Isle of Man – July 5
  • Waitangi Day – New Zealand – February 6

…and many more. Throw this in with all the Saints days and other religious holidays, and we could party all year long!
