Two Quick Earthly Diversions

Geocaching and Maps

Here are two quick video links that I found while browsing my RSS feeds this morning. Oddly enough, both are hosted on Vimeo.com, but I found them linked from different sources. First is the video “Where the Hell is Matt?” found link in an article on BoingBoing.net. Matt is a 31 year old slacker who … Read More “Two Quick Earthly Diversions” »

A Cautionary Technology Tale

EdTech, General Technology

This is an absolutely true story which took place last Thursday, June 26. The names have NOT been changed to protect the innocent because we enjoy giving Noel Kane-Maguire grief about this. Every summer the Furman Chemistry Department hosts a corporate luncheon to show appreciation for the sponsors of their summer research program. Professor Noel … Read More “A Cautionary Technology Tale” »

Paddling Lake Fairfield

I had been paddling on Lake Cunningham twice in as many weeks, so I decided it was time to give our little backyard lake another try. Large snapping turtles and burrowing water rodents had made a mess of our bank, so I really don’t have a good canoe/kayak launch anymore. Also, the siltation has gotten … Read More “Paddling Lake Fairfield” »

Tom Kayak OOB

In case you haven’t noticed, I love to paddle. My preference is for moving water, but a nice flatwater paddle on a river or lake can be fun, too. I started this obsession when I was about fifteen, running the Enoree River with my high school buddies in an army surplus inflatable raft that had more patches than original material. College years were more adventurous trips in large whitewater rafts, or lazy floats in inner tubes. When I started teaching I could afford a cheap Coleman canoe (which I still have), and now I paddle a Perception Torrent sit-in-top whitewater kayak. This being said, I have now put together my paddling resume’ in Google Earth KMZ format.

Bracing Discoveries

Miscellaneous, Uncategorized

I resolve not to have any online pity-parties about getting braces. Millions of people get these things and seem to get along just fine. Millions of others have much more serious problems, to which this pales in comparison. I’ll make these comments, then be done with it, unless something unusual happens. Here’s what I’ve noticed … Read More “Bracing Discoveries” »

Strange sensations coming over me Something I can’t explain Suddenly there’s an endless void where I used to keep my brain I gotta see a doctor, but I’m too wasted to phone one Wanna customize my van and I don’t even own one Ah, ah, ah, Oh! I’m turning into a heavy metal head Ah, … Read More “Metal Head” »

The Smithsonian Institute is the latest organization to begin posting photos on Flickr. There are currently just under 900 photographs available. The majority of this are historic photos. There is a set of scientists and inventors, a set of famous artists, and a couple of sets devoted to various American cultures. One set focuses on … Read More “Smithsonian Now on Flickr” »

…as evidenced by the sign-in/out board in our office. Everyone else seems to be away at a conference or at meetings. I myself wonder why I showed up. I used the week to catch up on some filing and getting things squared away in my office. This morning we had two minor crises as a … Read More “It’s been a quiet week in Lake Wobegon…” »

Paddling Lake Cunningham

Posted on June 16, 2008 By Tom No Comments on Paddling Lake Cunningham
Local, Paddling

It’s an interesting turn of circumstances. When we first got our kayaks we would run up to Lake Cunningham a couple of times a week to get some exercise and to relax. Then we moved into our current house, which is on a lake. Now we hardly ever paddle, even with ready access to water. … Read More “Paddling Lake Cunningham” »

Father’s Day Rambles

This was my first week of four long days of work and Fridays off. This particular Friday I decided to get a jump start on the Father’s Day weekend and run down to see my father. One thing I inherited from my dad is a love of rambling. Our family has some legendary tales of … Read More “Father’s Day Rambles” »
