The time I’ve spent cruising Google Earth lately has made one thing abundantly clear – our cities’ rooftops are outright ugly.  It used to be that no one would ever see them, so they were the perfect place for those unsightly but necessary building components, such as HVAC units.  Take, for example, this view of downtown Atlanta…

…lots of stuff on the tops of roofs, but not any place you really want to be.  This is consistent with most of the cities I’ve visited in GE.  However, some companies are becoming more aware of the potential of mapping systems such as Google and Yahoo for advertising.  There was an article in the MIT Advertising Lab blog about companies that are starting to use this rooftop medium.  Finding rooftop ads has also been a staple of the Keyhole Google Earth Community, as their discussions show.  Type "Advertising" into their search function and you will be taken to tons of threads with GE placemark files.

The Google Earth image of USANA was found near Salt Lake City.  Just across the interstate from USANA are the Discover Card  offices…
