Pickens County on Flickr

Internet, Local

As I’m looking for information about small towns, I’m stumbling across some fantastic resources. The latest is an offering by the Pickens County Library System. The have set up a Flickr account for the historic photographs in their collection. The original photographs and negatives are house in in the Mary Oates Gregorie Historical Room at the Captain Kimberly Hampton Memorial Library in Easley.

The photo collection is fairly extensive, including nearly 500 images. These seemed to be well-organized into sets on the Flickr account. Even more impressive, it looks like they have tried to geotag as many images as possible. I actually came across the collection when I spotted one of their images in the Google Earth Flickr feed from Metaltoad.

By making these images publicly available on Flickr, the Pickens Library is soliciting information from the public about the photos.  Users can add tags and comments, further adding to the body of knowledge about that particular image.  I think it’s a great idea, and I hope more libraries are able to follow their lead.
