Memories of Europe

On a rare Monday night when I don’t have rehearsal, I was watching BBC’s Top Gear. The three hosts had each selected a supercar – one Lamborghini, one Aston Martin, and one Porsche – and were driving across Europe looking for the perfect road upon which to test the cars.

The scenery the guys came upon was breathtaking, so this morning I decided to check out some of the locations from the show in Google Earth. I had enabled the Flickr and Panoramio layers, and the photos just reinforced my desire to head back across the Pond. I never got down into Switzerland, Austria, or Italy the last time I was in this area, but I would love to visit. I guess I’ll have to make sure I’ve got my lottery ticket for this week’s Powerball.

Speaking of the last time I was in that part of the world, while I was viewing the area in Google Earth I decided to try to find some of the cities and towns I had visited on my trip back in 1987. I was able to find Butzbach, Heidlelberg, Bacharach, and Cologne and find photos that jogged some memories. One of the things I remember most about Cologne was the Cathedral, and especially the square, where artists created stunning masterpieces with chalk on the sidewalks. I was surprised to see that the artwork actually shows up in Google Earth. Below is a view of the Cathedral, and the sidewalk art is clearly visible.

Cologne Cathedral Art

You can see the artwork just to the lower left of the cathedral.  It might be easier to see in its original size, though.

Very cool with the art on the sidewalk. I LOVE TOPGEAR. I watch more and more BBCA lately.
