This was originally posted on my old website, but I thought it bore reposting here…

Grandma Soup Ingredients: (no grandma version)

  • 3 medium-sized potatoes
  • 2 24 oz cans of stewed tomatoes, cut up
  • 1 12 oz can of butter beans
  • 1 12 oz can of whole kernal sweet corn
  • 1 12 oz can of tomato soup
  • 8 oz of dice ham
  • 1 large stock pot with appetite to match
  • 1 tsp salt

Wash, peal, then dice the potatoes into .25 inch cubes. Place in stock pot with enough water to cover for several inches. Add 1 tsp salt. Bring to boil, then lower heat and allow to simmer until potatoes are soft, about 45 minutes. Drain potatoes. Add the cans of vegetables, soup, and ham to the stock pot, stirring with each addition. Salt and pepper to taste, then allow to simmer for another 20 minutes, or until heated throughout. My grandmother made this soup for my mom, who in turn made it for us. Although it looks like chunky vomit, it tastes great, and is comfort food..

Only looked like chunky vomit when Dad would crumble his corn bread into his bowl and let soak – now that looked downright uneatable!
