OK, our team has got to stop this. Furman barely edged out the Citadel in triple overtime after coming from a fourteen point deficit. The turnaround only occured after back-up quarterback Renaldo Gray took over from Ingle Martin.
Martin supposedly suffered from either a foot injury or cramps, which removed him from the game. My thought is that it was a convenient excuse to have him save face while putting in someone fresh. The ruse was thinly veiled, at best, especially since at halftime Coach Bobby Lamb was speaking about poor choices made by the quarterback.
With Furman playing so eratically, how should the local pundits react? I think, in particular, of Josh Bartlett of the Greenville Journal. In his "Armchair Quarterback" column, he gives predictions for the upcoming games. He has always predicted Furman winning. How can he do otherwise? Seems to me that if he predicted a loss, even if that is a realistic assessment, he would be branded a traitor to his hometown and his former team. Same goes for predicting a loss for Clemson.
I’ll be less hesitant and say that it will be a miracle if we hang in there against our next three opponents.
