A Concert of Remembrance

Greenville Chorale Rehearsal

This afternoon the Greenville Chorale presents Music for Life – Celebrated & Remembered. The concert will be at First Baptist Church at 3:00 pm, and will feature the Durafle’ Requiem, Brahms Nanie, and several shorter works.

This year our concert season was thrown off a bit with unusual scheduling. This left and opportunity for a concert such as this – shorter repertoire in a less formal setting that the Peace Center. The concert theme was chosen because of several prominent passings, specifically the death of my friend and long time Chorale member, Steve Pace, as well as the tragedy of the firefighters in Charleston and other similar events. The concert is to be a remembrance of those, and for those who have died in Iraq. The music is beautiful, but there will be a sombre note to the concert.

As I mentioned, our concert season is a little unusual this year. April for me personally will be a busy singing month. I’ve got this afternoon’s concert, and the Chorale will be singing at Artisphere on April 20. We finish up our season the first weekend in May with the Greenville Symphony and a performance of Mahler’s 2nd “Resurrection” Symphony, which we performed in Brevard last August. In addition to the Chorale concerts, I’ve been asked to sing with the Spartanburg Festival Chorus in a performance of the Brahms Requiem on April 19. Come to think of it, that’s a lot of singing about death between now and May. I may need some lighter fare by that time.
